PLDT Fibr: 100 Mbps Fiber Optic Broadband!

PLDT has just rolled out fiber optic broadband technology to select subdivisions in Metro Manila. This new technology (well, new to us but kinda old already in other countries) promises speeds of up to 100 Mbps.

As of now, this is only offered to people living in the following places:

-> Forbes Park, Makati
-> Urdaneta Village, Makati
-> Palm Pointe, Alabang
-> Wack Wack Village, Mandaluyong
-> all Valle Verde villages in Pasig

The prices were kind of ridiculous at this point, with ₱20,000 for 100 Mbps plan, ₱6,500 for the 15 Mbps plan, and ₱3,500 for the 8 Mbps plan. No wonder this is only offered to people living in luxury villages listed above.

Some of my friends' initial thoughts on this were this is too expensive. Other countries have this technology at a much cheaper rate and yet profitable. Optical fiber is much cheaper than copper wire and yet these prices are ridiculous.

Seriously, I thought this kind of technology will never reach the Philippine shores. And though I'm glad that we are now having fiber optic broadband in our country, this was a little too late and I'm guessing that it will take another 2-3 years or even more before this becomes available and affordable to regular Filpinos.

To anyone who lives in the places I've mentioned and already availed of this offer from PLDT, I would love to hear from you guys about the speeds that you're getting.

On the other hand, the fastest that PLDT has to offer right now is 10 Mbps at ₱4,000.
