New Trailers for Street Fighter X Tekken: Additional Characters and Battle System

sfx3logo21

Capcom has revealed a lot of info this weekend at New York Comic Con and they are definitely hyping up this game. Aside from a definite release date (March 6, 2012 for North America and Asia, March 9 for Europe), lots of new Tekken characters are introduced to be included in the game(although they are not fully shown, they are definitely very obvious). The gameplay mechanics is explained very well in a trailer. More after the jump.

The following teaser trailers show Devil Jin, Paul Phoenix, Dragunov, Zafina, Alisa, Xiaoyu, Lars, Mokujin, and Marshall Law.

Watch the next trailer for the full explanation of the gameplay mechanics.

This trailer actually made me hyped up about this game. I especially liked the part when Raven and Yoshimitsu are demonstrating the Switch Cancel system. Damn, that was so badass. It's interesting to note that a lot of the tag mechanics of the game are a bit similar with Tekken Tag Tournament 2, like the launcher into tag combo and the Switch Cancel system. On the other hand, the Cross Assault system reminds me of Critical Parade in Street Fighter EX3. Of course, there are tag mechanics that are pretty new and unique to fighting games with tag mechanics like the Pandora system.

You will notice that this game would be highly strategical with a lot of meter management involved. However, one thing I'm not liking so far about the mechanics is the Gem System. It seems that Capcom caters too much to noobs lately and gives them incentives for sucking at the game. X-Factor of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Ultras of Street Fighter IV, and now the Gem System. Seriously, why reward the player with 10% bonus for getting hit with special moves 2 or more times? Why give a player an autoblock for sucking in defense? Yes, it still consumes your cross bar, but I have a bad feeling that this is gonna be the most abused mechanic of the game seeing how easily accessible it is.

Another issue I'm seeing is this is another straight-to-console fighting game. In my opinion, I want a fighting game to be released to arcades first before making it out to console. It's like the beta phase of the game for fighting games, people get to play the game, test out the mechanics, figure out the bugs, glitches, overpowered moves, and imbalances in the game so Capcom can tweak it before releasing it on console. Of course, people who don't have access to arcades will definitely disagree, but seeing how Super Street Fighter IV has gone several tweaks/patches in console now due to unbalanced gameplay, I have my reasons for thinking that way. I might discuss this in a separate article in the future.

Honestly, I don't want to judge the game this early. At the same time, I don't want Capcom to make the game retarded and ruin the integrity of the competitiveness of this game just because they want it to be as easily accessible as possible to newcomers. I don't want this game to be a joke like Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

As an additional note, if you pre-order the Special Edition of Street Fighter X Tekken, you'd get the following bonuses:

  • Build-It-Yourself Arcade Cabinet Bank (approximately 5”H)
  • Exclusive Prequel Comic Book by UDON
  • 36 Gems: Includes All Pre-Order Packs Plus An Exclusive Pack
  • Nine Exclusive Gems Only Available For Pre-Ordering Special Edition
