I've just moved in to a new apartment 2 weeks ago. The expenses have been draining me since I moved during the last few days of May, then I moved again due to safety concerns. Damn, no internet connection of my own for more than two months now. And it gets worse - I'm so broke now that I might not have one in the next few weeks... or even worse, months (hopefully not). T_T
Despite the financial crisis that I'm experiencing, I'm still trying to decide which ISP I will subscribe to and what subscription plan I will get just in case the time comes that I can handle having one. Besides, I will definitely need it later on as my current job demands me to work at home at times. In my province, my family is enjoying a 1 Mbps subscription plan from Globelines, and they haven't had any problems so far. Having a PS3 at home, I'm thinking of getting another 1 Mbps subscription plan from Globelines here, because as a general consensus, you should not get a wireless connection if you're doing a lot of online gaming as it requires stable upload and download speeds. However, a wired internet connection is such a hassle when you're just renting an apartment. You need to have an agreement with the lessor (some apartment lessors require a right-of-way fee before you could install a wired internet connection!), and when the time comes that you need to leave and move in to a new apartment, you either have to:
1) disconnect your current subscription (which is very costly if the lock-in period hasn't ended yet) and open a new subscription (which will require another installation fee, that's P500 for Globelines); or
2) send a request to your ISP to transfer your internet connection to where you're moving in, which is more or less P3000 as far as I remember.
It won't be much of a problem if you're planning to stay on your apartment for a long ass time, but I don't see myself staying that long.
So I looked into the available wireless internet subscription plans out there, and the most favourable I found is, well, Globe Tattoo. I first checked the SuperStick plans on their site, and having a 5 Mbps plan for only P1299 sounds too good already, considering the other Telcos offer up to 2 Mbps only for now (you may correct me on this one if I'm mistaken). But then I noticed another tab in there named Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini. The name reminded me of the racing car brand, one of my brother's favorite racing cars in Need for Speed video games. The new broadband plan offering from Globe is supposed to utilize 4G (Globe offers HSPA+ network for now) network which they started rolling out 2 months ago. The plan offers speeds of up to a whopping 10 Mbps! Granted of course, that you're within an area with a 4G network, which is pretty limited as of this writing. It's impossible to attain that speed of course, but if you can get to at least nearly half of that, that would be dope.
The reviews and forum comments that I've read have been generally positive so far. 3.8 to 4.2 Mbps download speeds and that's for HSDPA/WCDMA networks only? Wow, that sounds so dope. However, the subscription price may deter me from getting it. P2199 per month is a pretty hefty chunk out of my pocket. Shucks.

As far as I know, Smart will compete with these speeds with their recently introduced Smart Bro Rocket who's promising a 12 Mbps speed. However, unlike Globe's Tonino Lamborghini, Smart Bro Rocket will only be offered in prepaid. I've already heard a lot of negative feedbacks for it this early, like bandwidth capping, data volume packages crap, etc.
If only I could get the Lambo plan I would write my own review for it. The reviews I've read so far only cover download/torrent speeds from a laptop/PC so I want to cover other areas just in case such as online gaming. But for now, I don't think I can avail of this pretty sweet offer.
Though this new offer from Globe is promising, I don't think it's worth it to avail this now, unless you don't mind having 3G signal instead of 4G. The number of areas with 4G even in Metro Manila is currently very limited. You can't really take advantage of the Tonino Lamborghini stick unless you're within a 4G covered area.
Given the chance (and money of course), I might avail the Superstick plan 1299 one of these days. A portable internet connection proves to be very helpful especially for my job. Being a technical support engineer will require you to be on point and be able to work on every issue that arises, in office or not, whether you're at the comfort of your own home, at the mall, or even during transit. Besides, this will surely provide me more time so I can post more topics on this blog as I can't access my blog in the office (oh yeah, WebSense sucks by the way). I might create a review for this, as I will test this using my PS3, my PSP, my office laptop, my PC at the province, and maybe my friends' gadgets such as iPad 2, iPhone 4G, etc. if they will cooperate. ^__^
Overall, Globe (and other Telcos for that matter) introducing 4G sounds very promising. I hope they can roll out this new cutting edge technology to every part of the country in no time at all and also offer these services at a lower price. This will definitely change the people's pretty bad perspective of our wireless broadband internet plans here.
If you are already subscribed to Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini let me know your thoughts about it.
